Hafa Adai!

It is a wonderful thing that you are doing! Along with you on this historic journey are people from Guahan (Guam) and Saipan, Luta (Rota), Tinian, and Pagan in the Northern Marianas, as well as people who have left these islands and now live scattered across the globe. People from Hawaii to the US Mainland, to Europe and the Middle East, are helping and working together to bring back the Chamorro Flying Proa!

This legendary open ocean sailing canoe, called "Sakman" in Chamorro, is more than just a very, very fast canoe. It is highly symbolic. It was once the fastest sailing vessel in the world - the ingenous invention of a people who lived in isolation for perhaps 3000 years. The Sakman was taken from the Chamorro people by force by Spanish colonizers and its loss was devastating. But Chamorros are a resilent people. We survived the Spanish era. We survived the German Era. We survived Japanese colonialism. We survived World War II occupation. And now, over two and a half centuries after the last Sakman was seen, it is time we reclaimed this cultural treasure!

Centuries ago, Chamorro navigators guided their Sakman across vast distances to land safely home. Today we are the navigators. From the distant past a Sakman is making its way across a sea of time to our shores and it is up to us to guide it home.

Join us - become a navigator!
